We exclusively use Exterior Insulation and Finish Systems, commonly known as EIFS (pronounced "eefs"). Sometimes referred to as synthetic stucco, EIFS brings many benefits beyond stucco.
About EIFS
EIFS is a type of wall cladding that can mimic the look of traditional stucco, but is actually a multi-layer system. The layers typically include:
- Water Resistive Barrier that covers the substrate, such as house wrap, felt paper or gypsum board
- Drainage Plane for moisture control, usually in the form of adhesive applied vertically
- Insulation Board which can be anywhere from 1" to 12" thick
- Water-Resistant Base Coat to serve as a weather barrier
- Reinforcing Mesh which provides durability and strength
- Primer and Finish Coats made of acrylic material
The finish texture can be customized based on the customer's preferences. As a result, EIFS provides a great deal of flexibility.
Advantages
Energy efficiency is a major advantage to using EIFS. According to the EIFS Industry Members Association, using this system can reduce air filtration by as much as 55% compared to standard brick or wood construction. This is due to the fact that EIFS acts as a continuous insulation wrap around the entire structure.
EIFS is generally considered maintenance-free. As with any cladding, inspections should be done periodically to be sure that seams are intact and there is no surface damage from tree branches or hail after storms, for instance. Never attach anything to the cladding that would puncture the surface.
EIFS is lightweight when compared to other exterior cladding. As a result, the need for concrete and structural steel for exterior wall support is reduced, especially in commercial buildings.
Finishes
Because EIFS is extremely versatile, there are endless texture, colors and design combinations available.
EIFS can replicate the look of traditional stucco in virtually any color, as seen below.

When used with a template, EIFS can also simulate the look of brick, as seen here.

EIFS can also be used in combination with any other cladding materials.
